“Deliberate Practice”
“Deliberate Practice” is an evidence-based method for learning skills and improving performance. It provides principles of skill-building that are derived from decades of research on how top performers improve their skills” (from the International Society for Deliberate Practice website). Performers of all kinds use deliberate practice to improve. Athletes, doctors, musicians, chefs, all practice their skills repeatedly in order to develop expertise. As therapists, we have been taught that aside from a few (dreaded) role plays in graduate school, all you really need is years of experience sitting with clients and receiving consultation, and then you can consider yourself an expert.
Deliberate Practice is a movement among mental health professionals that seeks to challenge this norm, and create space for therapists to practice their skills and receive feedback in real time, rather than waiting until a meeting with a consultant or supervisor.
