Asian Americans were categorized as “others” until 2000, and are currently one of the fastest growing populations in the US. Studies on Asian American’s mental health issues are limited and they are often referred to as “the modal minorities.” Some studies show that the misconception and limited knowledge of mental health issues among Asian Americans are the main reasons for their underutilization of treatment and social services. This workshop will identify the diversity and complexity of Asian Americans and address common clinical and cultural issues. The participants will also learn effective and practical approaches and techniques to establish a therapeutic alliance with the population.
