President’s Letter Continued:

It’s like I blinked my eyes and time jumped forward. I’m sure like many of you, I had grand plans at the outset of the pandemic- I was going to redecorate, learn how to garden, cook dinner more often, catch up on my for pleasure reading, work towards an advanced certificate, exercise; sound familiar? Although what we are accomplishing may not look anything like these pie-in-the-sky aspirations, I believe that they are equally as impressive. First and foremost, we are keeping our heads above water (most of the time)! We have embraced new technologies. We are supporting our clients, friends and family the best we can. We’ve carved out spaces in our homes and dubbed them “home offices”. We are surviving pandemic isolation, co-habitation, caretaking, parenting and virtual/hybrid schooling. We are building connections, enhancingour learning and are seeking support from our peers.

That’s where NJAWT comes in.  Since the onset of the pandemic, we’ve added over 14 new members, membership participation in programming has skyrocketed and long-time members are more active.  Perhaps this is due to the flexibility and accessibility that Zoom provides. Perhaps it is the new membership benefit introduced just two weeks after full quarantine took effect—the Sunday Night Zoom Call- a virtual, weekly support group.  Out of this service grew several monthly, peer facilitated, support and specialty groups.  NJAWT has something for everyone: a creative group; aclinical consultation group; a private practice support group; a drop-in general support group; a couple’s clinical consultation group; and a child and adolescent peer consultation group. Or perhaps it is our top-notch programming, the E-bulletin’s arrival in your inbox monthly, or our private Facebook group. Whatever your reason for being a part of this unique organization, welcome, we’re glad you’re here.

NJAWT has an exciting year planned.  We will be rolling out a state-of-the-art website, which has a more sophisticated on-line membership directory, an interactive calendar and an on-line RSVP system.  We will continue to offer our stellar programing and specialty groups through the spring via Zoom. I invite all of you to join me for a special drop-in support group meeting on Sunday, March 14thstarting at 7:30 PM as we take a look back at the past year, discuss what we’ve learned and set a plan to move forward. Mark your calendars for Friday, May 7th for our annual CE event, when Yuko Inzana, MSW, LCSW presents “Asian Americans: Cultural Issues and Effective Treatment Strategies”.

As always, please feel free to reach out anytime with any questions, concerns or suggestions. I can be reached at my dedicated NJAWT e-mail address, or @ (973) 879-1678.

Thank you for your membership,
